Ingrown toenail removal painful?
Hi, I'm 13 and I have an ingrown toenail. I have major anxiety sometimes and when I have to go to the doctor to have something painful done, I always watch videos and freak myself out. I'm not scared of the removal of the toenail completely, I just am TERRIFIED of needles. I also have no pain tolerance, and if I feel a prick of a needle I can start crying. I'm literally that freaked out of needles and shots. Especially in toes and fingers, which I have never had done before. Are the shots super painful? Or are they something you can bare. Please answer truthfully, and if you have any tips for me then please say so.
You sound a lot like me at that age. I started having a lot of ingrown toenail problems at the same age and went to the podiatrist numerous times over the years to have the sides of my nails cut out. After a few times, the right nail finally stopped getting ingrown but the left continued so they stepped it up a notch by also using a solution on that side of the nail bed to kill it from regrowing. I had no more problems until I hit 40-the right nail got worse every month. This time the doctor suggested simply removing the nail. I'd read a ton about it and it's a pretty good option. The procedure is basically the same though recovery time may be a little longer-no big deal. Best of all-no nail growing back means you have 100% chance you'll never have to do it again-BONUS!
I'm not good with needles either. Ever since I was a kid I've hated them and often faint during or after any procedure involving a needle on me. As I've gotten older I still hate them but I almost never pass out from it anymore-I guess now it's because I'm more in control of my life and my health care...I guess-ha. I suggest rationalizing the needle/pain thing against the pain the darned toe is causing you-that a quick needle prick is the start of the end of your toe troubles and you are "controlling" things-not the other way around...start doing this now before going to the doctor. On your way there try to talk a lot or do things to keep the pain out of your mind. Get into a discussion with your parents or nurse while the procedure is going on and it will help it go by faster. When you do feel the pain, don't be afraid of it-try to be remembering it as it happens-again sort of like you are in control of it, not it of you. Also, by remembering it you'll no longer be afraid of the unknown in the future. Sorry if this all sounds like stupid dreamy talk but I think it's really helped me get better over the years.
As for the shots for this procedure, I can totally sympathize with you. I mean you only think of shots going into big fleshy areas like arms and thighs, right? So how the heck do they do it to a toe? Well, it's a much smaller needle for starters. The way it's always gone for me is first they wipe down your toe and the area with alcohol for cleanliness, then you will feel a thump-kind of like someone flicking your ear. Oddly enough after that you don't really feel the needle going in so much as it hitting some of the random nerves in your toe-for me usually on the bottom or sides. Best news of all for you is it feels more like a stinging sensation for 3 or so seconds for each area shot. After that they have you lay there for 15-30 minutes for the toe to get numb so they can do the procedure.
It's kind of weird to look down and not see any nail on this toe anymore but I know how bad an ingrown is-day after day, every darned minute. I was so ready to get rid of that little piggy! I'm so happy with it now that I am planning on getting the other removed next summer since it's starting to grow funny again. I just want it gone and over with. I know a lot of older folks that never did anything about their toes and have gone all their lives with the pain and mess. Honestly if I can do this (ha, I've done it about 8 times now), anyone can do it. I wish I'd done like you are and just had the darned nails removed the first time around! Anyway, you'll do fine and be glad you did it.
