Tube Grip Kit
East German surplus AKM upper foregrip won't fit on WASR10/63...?
I bought a surplus East German parts kit for my WASR10/63 (Romanian AKM) that was a set with a replacement foregrip and upper connector for the gas tube, pistol grip, and stock and all fit nicely except the upper gas tube, the part that goes over the foregrip and connects the gas tube to the bolt. It seemed to be slightly big but looked like it would fit if i hit it down hard enough it might possibly snap in place but i wasnt sure if it'd be safe to shoot it after doing so so I just kept the original WASR10/63 one there. So my question is, had I put the East German one forced in place there, would it be safe to shoot or would I need a gunsmith to modify it to fit on? I'm wondering because I still have the East German one somewhere and it'd look a lot nicer with all the East German parts on.
I wouldn't force the parts to fit, instead, I would try and do the following. The wood Romy and East German plastic hand guards can be separated from their metal gas tubes. You have to spin or rotate the wood or plastic around the gas tube's axis 180 degrees to get it off. I placed the small flat area of the gas tube (closest to the receiver) in a padded vice. I then rotated the wood off, doesn't matter which way. It took considerable effort to do so, but if you work on it, it will eventually start to move a little and finally come off. Be patient, and try to feel the best way for it to come off. Once it's off, you'll be able to see that the tenons on the upper are really like a half circle.
This way, you can put the matching E.G. upper on the Romy gas tube that you know already fits your weapon.
